In winter we usually go skiing in Norway, while in summer we prefer camping. In spring we often take a week in some major city in Europe - fx. Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Barcelone, Rome and others.
In 2003 we could celebrate our silver-wedding; at that time we were not able to travel - instead we took a week in Madeira the following January. This was our second visit to Madeira, and we are very fond of the island which among other things has the advantage that English is widely spoken. We have learned to valuate Madeira Wine.
We prefer camping for summer holidays. We started with a tent back in 1978. It was replaced later by a tent-wagon, and finally by a Rapido folding caravan. Compared with the elegant and luxurious caravans often seen you may think that ours is a modest one. However, it got what is needed: 2 beds, a small kitchen, gas, refrigerator and toilet. It is now (2008) 13 years old. Is is easy to travel with.
When arriving, it is opened and functioning within 5 minutes. We do not miss microwave oven, telly, washing machine or vacuum cleaner in our caravan. Is is just a place where we sleep....
As we have no children we have always had our summer holiday rather late, in recent years in September. So we avoid the heat and the tourist-crowd.
We never experience that a campsite is occupied at our arrival and we do not have to make reservations. Almost all people camping in September are seniors, and we enjoy the absence of loud "music" day and night - everything is quieter after the high season.
So, we appreciate quiet campsites without entertainment, and we prefer primitive places.
We allways leave our dogs at home, in care of Kis' sister, as we do not think the dogs like boring driving for hours. But we allways miss them then.
This summer (2009) we sold our beloved Rapido folding caravan, and brougt a brand new Adria Altea 360. It is not more spacious than he other one, but certainly more modern. Like the old one it has a small kitchen and a toilet, but in addition it has a gas heater - and a mover, which is a real nice thing to have.
We left early in September and stayed 5 days at the nice camping Vidlak in the Czech Republic before proceeding to Egar in Hungary, where we spent 10 days in the sun, until we proceeded to Podersdorf by Neusiedler See (Burgenland, Austria). In Hungary as well as in Burgenland we enjoyed the rich local wines, including Tokaj.
We returned after some 3 weeks after an adventurous summer holiday. The advantage of camping in September is that the campsites are not crowded, and the majority of people are seniors, ensuring quiet nights...
